Capacity Planning - 2

PERT calculations helps us to calculate the tasks on how much time it took to complete. On further tasks how much time it is going to take to complete. In a project an event or task can be codified and put into the timeboxed event. With the previous resource how much time it took same can be calculated with the future event called as forecasting.

Not only forecasting also can be utilized to provide managers information how their team performing in each tasks also the report can be used to compare with the other teams.

But there is a challenge that how to complete all the tasks within the time. Here comes our another star CPM, Critical path method.

Think about you’re making a biryani at your home, for example, Saraswathi, Nisha, Gomathi are helping to prepare biryani

Saraswathi cuts vegetable and grind masala

Nisha goes out and bring oil

Gomathi going to prepare the biryani

So plan is this

1st activity cut the vegetables 2 hours, 2nd activity grinding masala1 hour, 3rd arrange the dry masala 1 hour, 4th activity going to shop 2 hours, 5th activity prepare biryani which takes 1 hour

Start, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th, finish in one line

Start 4th, 5th in one line, finish in one line

Explained in CPM method, so 2nd, 3rd and 4th and 5th activity totally comes 2+1+1+1=5 hours

2nd path has 2+1=3 hours

So 5 hours is in critical path

Why we need to analyze critical path?

Imagine everyone in above scenario is busy, some one wants to delay, who can delay or which tasks can delay. If Total hours of 5 hours, in this Buying oil can be delayed probably Nisha can go to the market after an hour also. There will be no issues in preparing biryani on time.
